DUBUQUE, Iowa – Wendy Schabilion, licensed practical nurse (LPN) at Hawkeye Care Centers of Dubuque, has been named as an Iowa Health Care Association (IHCA) Foundation scholarship recipient. IHCA ICAL Executive Director Steve Ackerson presented Schabilion with the Foundation’s $1,000 John R. Grubb Scholarship for her outstanding commitment to long term services and supports and the residents she serves at Hawkeye Care Centers of Dubuque.
Schabilion fell in love with her profession while working in long term services and supports over the past three years. She recently became a LPN at Northeast Iowa Community College and is currently continuing her education there to obtain her registered nursing license.
“I have been blessed and honored to be allowed to be part of some truly remarkable lives,” said Schabilion in her nomination essay. “I have learned what true love means, I have learned how to be patient, I have learned how to be a friend, and I have learned the pain of loss.”
“Wendy will go the extra mile by talking to a family and understanding what the resident likes and dislikes so she can understand better how to take care of the person,” said Dani Ettema, administrator at Heritage Manor. “Wendy is the kind of Nurse you want to have on every shift because she just knows what needs to be done and does it.”
The Iowa Health Care Association Foundation is supported by the 819 member organizations of the Iowa Health Care Association and the Iowa Center for Assisted Living, which includes Iowa nursing facilities, assisted living communities, residential care facilities, home health agencies and long term services and supports associated businesses.
